Auditions Announced for New Play Festival 2017

After a successful inaugural showcase last year, the Playwrights Workshop Trinbago’s Annual New Play Festival will return to the Trinidad Theatre Workshop from October 26 – November 5, 2017. This year’s festival will once again feature three plays that have never been staged – Aryana Mohammed’s “Sunrise Love to Sunset Hate”, Toni Lima’s “Bedbugs” and Tony Hall’s “One From Ten Leaves Naught.” Auditions for Bedbugs and “One from Ten…” will be held over the next two weekends.

Toni Lima’s Bedbugs uses the Mighty Spoiler’s 1953 calypso of the same name as a central theme. Four street dwellers – Jabbers, Blues, Netty and Dollars, are free from the confines of modern society. Literally living outside the box, they maintain this sense of freedom through the lies they tell themselves and each other. But what will happen when someone dares to speak the truth? This play will be directed by Fulbright Scholar Michailean Taylor and Dr. Helmer Hilwig will serve as dramaturge.

Tony Hall’s One From Ten Leaves Naught envisions some of the West Indies’ greatest statesmen, leaders, and artists in an in-between stagnant afterlife which they cannot leave. As they engage with each other in conflict and camaraderie, the leadership of Trinidad and Tobago’s first Prime Minister is evident as time and again he emphasizes his vision for the West Indies and ponders his fate with a few close comrades. The play will be directed by Yale Fellow Marcus Waldron, with Rawle Gibbons as the play’s dramaturge.

Auditions for Bedbugs will take place on August 20th and 27th, while auditions from One From Ten Leaves Naught will take place on August 26th and 27th. All auditions will take place at the Trinidad Theatre Workshop, corner Jerningham Avenue and Norfolk Street, Belmont, from 9 am to 3 pm on all days.
