Actor Renaldo Frederick has been gracing the film and theatre stages of T&T since he won a Most Promising Actor Award in the Secondary Schools Drama Festival in 2009. Now, “Red” as he’s popularly known, is excited to move on to the next stage of his career as he has been accepted to the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art in London to do the Master of Arts in Theatre Lab.
Studying abroad is expensive, so Frederick is holding a fundraising event titled IncREDible to assist in raising TT$100,000 towards tuition, accommodation and living expenses. The event, to be held August 20th (TODAY), will involve improvisation, skits dance, songs and an hour-long production.
Frederick said he was proud to have been accepted to the prestigious institution, following a rigourous application and audition process in London. He said growing up he never considered being an actor but the course of his life changed when the drama teacher at Trinity College East, Shawn Smart, approached him about acting in the Drama Festival. He realized acting was a fulfilling career.
“I wouldn’t say I was inspired to be an actor, it was mainly just being at the right place at the right time and following through on opportunities I was presented with. I got a lot of support and positive feedback from Mr. Smart and actor and director Che Rodriguez as well as my parents.”
Frederick said when he’s done studying, in addition to doing stage and film acting, he would like to come back to Trinidad and open an acting academy for young people, to expose them to theatre and film as careers.
“Additionally I would want to have a theatre space where I show adult theatre shows with stronger sexual and inappropriate content and dealing with much more sensitive issues, because art is supposed to reflect life, and it doesn’t have to be bad, it can just be really raw and inappropriate, but still humorous and appealing at the same time.”
Frederick has acted with the National Theatre Arts Company of T&T (NTACTT), DMAD Company, Trinidad Theatre Workshop and Eh Bien Oui Don Don, among others. Some of his more memorable roles are Jim in Two Can Play by Trevor Rhone, Cassius from Julius Caesar, Ivan from Dry Season by Ronald Amoroso and William Stanhope in a play called Saffronia by Christian D Leach. He also had roles in films Girlfriend’s Getaway, Pan! Our Music Odyssey and The Blood and the Bois, among others.
Frederick said he enjoys acting knowing that he can “inspire positive change in people so they can improve their lives and essentially improve their society and on a greater note the country. It’s a great filling feeling when you get an audience reaction, for someone to have a real connection, is a really beautiful feeling and I don’t think I could describe that or replace that with anything else in the world.”
Tickets cost $100. Call 382-0059, 769-5151, 786-7024 or find IncREDible on Facebook. Concert takes place at 6:30 pm on Sunday 20th August at #1 College Avenue, Trincity, BATCE Auditorium.
