A Gala Premiere for ‘Queen of the Road – The Calypso Rose Musical’

The highly acclaimed production, Queen of the Road – The Calypso Rose Musical, written and directed by Rhoma Spencer and presented by YES Productions is a soul-stirring experience that will capture the hearts and minds of Trinidad and Tobago. On May 10th 2024, it will premiere with a 7:30pm gala opening at the Central Bank Auditorium, under the distinguished patronage of Her Excellency Christine C. Kangaloo O.R.T.T., President of the Republic of Trinidad and Tobago. Repeat shows take place on May 11th and 12th at 6:30pm.

The Queen of Calypso shares her excitement for the Trinidad premiere.  “I am happy to know that the story of Calypso Rose will be told in Trinidad and I can’t wait to be there,” says Calypso Rose. The Calypso musical takes a journey down memory lane, recounting the life of Calypso Rose, born, Linda McCartha Monica Sandy-Lewis by fusing some of Rose’s iconic songs from her repertoire with classics like, ‘Tempo’, ‘Fire In Yuh Wire’, ‘I Thank Thee’, ‘Her Majesty’ and many more fan favourites.

The effervescent Stacey Sobers-Abraham, known for her vocal prowess and her NWAC 2018 Calypso Queen reign, steps into the spotlight as Calypso Rose and embodies the spirit of Rose in her delivery. The Queen of the Road production was brought to life at a workshop in 2023 at Hart House Theatre in Toronto, Canada. Spencer shared, “I cast her [Stacey Sobers] because I simply found that she looked like Rose. Only to find out when I approached her that she is called, ‘Young Rose’ at home by some members of the public. What a coincidence!”

Speaking to Rhoma Spencer’s work as, “transgressive” and “intergenerational storytelling”, Dr. Ryan Persadie [a visiting Assistant Professor at Connecticut College] shares, “Turning to memory, sound, and ancestral spirit as Spencer’s biographical method and itinerary, Calypso Rose repertoire functions as far more than just a collection of her life’s work, but provides us with a critical archive of Caribbean history, migration, and resistance as we, the audience members, are provided with glimpses, shimmers, and traces of the making of a Afro-Caribbean feminist politic that is only made possible by attuning to the vexed intimacies of body, spirit, sound, and being.”
