New Theatre Company to Make Its Debut

This week, Trinidad and Tobago will welcome its newest production company to the stage. Sapphire Productions; the brainchild of Gabrielle Scott – a promising University of the West Indies (UWI) B.A. Theatre Arts graduate who has been working with youths through theatre for the past 6 years, was born ‘out of the overflow of need for positive national change, creativity and a passion for theatre’ a media release said. On April 20th, the company will make its theatre debut with an adaptation of Shakespeare’s satirical comedy Much Ado About Nothing.

Gabrielle’s version will retain most of the language of the original play. However, it will also highlight several gripes and issues in contemporary Trinbagonian society.

“I want to make this play very relevant to the current climate of the nation so that persons attending can relate to the plot of the play while appreciating the genius of Shakespeare. We as a people can talk a lot but do very little when the opportunity arises. In this play, you are going to laugh, feel sad, as well as think about your roles as citizens of this country,”

the young founder and director stated.

The cocktail and gala premiere of Much Ado About Nothing will take place at the Central Bank Auditorium on Thursday 20th April while the second and final show will take place at Alicia’s Palace, Lady Chancellor Road on Friday April 21st. Part proceeds from the gala premiere will go towards the Autistic Society of Trinidad and Tobago- ASTT, an organization that is very dear to Gabrielle and Sapphire Productions.

Gabrielle, who has a passion for music therapy, has researched and studied how music allows autistic children to express themselves when everything else fails. Since then, she’s been drawn to this disorder and the way it is misunderstood, especially in the Caribbean. Gabrielle and her team at Sapphire Productions fully support the inclusion of persons with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) in all aspects of society and want to give back to the local cause by donating part profits from their very first event to the ASTT.

Tickets for Much Ado About Nothing are available at the Southern Academy for the Performing Arts (SAPA) Box Office, Craft Creators Ltd at West Mall and Seecharan Scott Chambers, Suite 6, 10 Queens Park West, POS.
