NDATT Vice President Triston Wallace and NDATT member Simeon Moodoo were on their way to the Lee Wah’s residence on the morning of June 24th when they learned of her 9 am passing that day. Wallace said,

“I have been speaking with Mrs. Lee Wah over the telephone for a few days now, with our last conversation being just two days ago [at the time of her passing]. Her voice was energised, seemed to be in high spirits and we were really looking forward to meeting each other. News of her death comes as a great shock.”

Other NDATT Members expressed their condolences and tributes:

“I knew Mavis quite well. She did a show with us in Jamaica and when [Trinidad] Theatre Workshop used to tour in the 70’s. She was a lovely person.” ~ Nigel Scott (NDATT Trustee)

“A true pioneer… and a giant in the field of theatre… Actress.  Director. Administrator.” ~ Zeno Constance

“[A] pioneer of theatre in Trinidad & Tobago together with her husband James Lee Wah…she was a tireless warrior…make new and wonderful vibrations in that new realm, Ma’am…Godspeed” ~ Michael Cherrie

“Ohhh a theatre icon gone on to glory. May she rest in perfect sleep. I could see her now [in] The Importance of being Ernest. Quite a beautiful actor. Sad.” ~ Rhoma Spencer.

Wallace met with the Lee Wah Family on June 26 to extend condolences on behalf of the NDATT. He said,

“It is unfortunate that we couldn’t have met under better circumstances. However, as the family responsible for us [NDATT] being here today, we are duty bound to assist the Lee Wah’s  in whatever way we can in their time of need.”

The NDATT is grateful for Mavis Lee Wah’s contribution to theatre in Trinidad and Tobago and the region. We hope her legacy will continue and inspire others to follow in her footsteps.
