We are only weeks away from the start of the Metamorphosis Dance Company’s 2019 season and excitement is high. Having impacted hundreds of Caribbean dance careers in its 25-year history, the dance company is pulling out all the stops showcasing a multi-genre weekend of dance concerts entitled, ‘Take Heart’ from the 9th to 12th May 2019 at Queen’s Hall.
With ‘Take Heart’, the Metamorphosis dance company will honor its past and forge new pathways. Artistic Director Nancy Herrera described the 2019 season as a lighter, more joyous expression of the exuberance of dance in all its forms.
“Last season we explored the darker side of the complexity of the human condition. For this year, we want to punctuate the mood with a spirit of happiness, joy and all the love we feel for dance, along with an exploration of the tenderness of relationships across generations, just in time for Mother’s Day,”
confirmed Herrera.
Through patterns in movement, meaningful thematic connections will be made to explore three cornerstones of the season, ‘Resilience’, ‘Happiness’ and ‘Love’.
The Queen’s Hall stage will be the canvas on which ‘Take Heart’ will portray dances that signal hope, joy and sharing connections between loved ones.
The season will feature the music of British Composer Adam Walters played by the UTT Ibis Ensemble, along with Classical music from Frédéric François Chopin a Polish composer and virtuoso pianist from the Romantic era played by pianist Hayward Mickens. A suite of Tangos will also be featured and more, as part of the wide repertoire available from the company during the weekend of shows.
While the climate of financial support for dance remains a challenge for the company, Artistic Director Nancy Herrera embodies the message of the season in her own resilience to keep the company performing.
“We have many huge plans for the company and welcome financial partners in expanding the reach of Caribbean dance, however, [we] cannot stand still waiting for something to happen. We owe it to the talented students, dancers of our company and choreographers to move forward with the work of dance in Trinidad and Tobago and the Caribbean,”
Herrera explained.
